Sharjah is the third largest of the United Arab Emirates, with a population of about 636,000 denizens. It is situated on both the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Sheikh Dr. Sultan ibn Muhammad Al Qasimi rules Sharjah. Sharjah encompasses 2,590 square kilometers of land – about 3.3 percent of the total area of the United Arab Emirates.

Sharjah is also the name of the emirate’s main city. The vast majority of the population is centered here – roughly 519,000 people. In addition to being a major commercial area, the city of Sharjah is also a cultural center, boasting numerous Islamic landmarks, museums, and public parks. Sharjah is also famous for its many beautiful mosques.

Of interest to tourists is the city’s Heritage District. The District contains an Islamic Museum, which is of interest to adherents and students of that particular faith, boasting handwritten extracts from the Qur’an, as well as numerous letters from the Prophet. The Sharjah Fort Museum is also located in the Heritage District. Keep in mind that the museums in the district have special hours set aside for female visitors; thus, it is a good idea to find out what the opening times are in advance before visiting the museums in the Sharjah city Heritage District.

Sharjah’s exposition center hosts an annual book fair, which attracts book publishers from around the globe.

In terms of transportation, Sharjah is linked to the outside world via a port and an international airport. A variety of fruits and vegetables are grown in Sharjah’s fertile soil.

In addition to the city of Sharjah, the emirate also boasts another fast growing city called Kalba. It is situated on the country’s east coast. Kalba is popular with visitors from all over the world for its mangrove forest and backwaters. In addition, there are hot springs here at nearby Wadi Halu, as well as several forts dating back to the ancient era.

Sharjah is a major center for Islamic studies. It also boasts numerous attractive beach resorts. Interestingly enough, the present Sheikh, who is a trained architect, designed the vast majority of the buildings in Sharjah.
